Hebrew is one of language revival's best-documented cases: after functioning mainly as a liturgical and literary language for close to 1,700 years, it was deliberately revived as an everyday spoken language beginning in the late 19th century, led by Eliezer Ben-Yehuda and the early Zionist movement. It shares Semitic root-and-pattern grammar with Arabic and Aramaic. Modern Hebrew borrows vocabulary from Yiddish, Arabic, Russian, and English while keeping its biblical grammatical core.
