Portuguese emerged alongside Spanish from Latin in the Iberian Peninsula and spread globally during the Age of Exploration, when Portuguese sailors established trade routes and colonies across Africa, Asia, and South America. Brazil is now home to the large majority of Portuguese speakers. It is close enough to Spanish that literate speakers of one can often read the other, though the spoken forms diverge more.
