Turkish is closest to Azerbaijani, with which it is largely mutually intelligible, and belongs to the wider Turkic family that stretches from the Balkans to Siberia. It switched from a modified Arabic script to a Latin-based alphabet in 1928 as part of Atatürk's post-Ottoman modernization reforms. Turkish is agglutinative, building long words by stacking suffixes onto a root in a very regular, rule-based way.
